I saw the title of a recipe the other day that inspired this dish. The title of the recipe was Mac&Chz Lasagna. I didn’t even bother reading the recipe, I just took the name and ran with it based on how I like to make my mac&chz and how I like to make my lasagna and just married the two in a casserole dish.
To me it was more like hamburger helper once you scooped it into a bowl, as it all sort of just meshed together (hence why I titled it as such)!
Now, I grew up eating plenty of hamburger helper in my day and it was quick and easy! I can’t say that I enjoy it now, but the concept of the dish is pretty neat! I’m certain this version isn’t any healthier (nor is it quick and easy) but it certainly tastes a whole lot better!
Ingredients
16 oz – Elbow Macaroni
1/4 cup – Unsalted Butter
2 tbsp – All-Purpose Flour

Prep / Cook Time: 30 min / 25 – 30 min
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cook macaroni, as normal (drain and set aside).
In a large saucepan, melt butter.
Add flour, mustard, salt and pepper.
Upon bubbling, add milk until boiling.
Turn heat to medium-low.
Gradually mix in 1 cup of cheese (stir until melted).
Mix in pasta.
In another large saucepan, brown beef.
Add pepper, onion (cook ~3 min).
Add sauce, tomatoes and preferred seasonings, simmer.
In an 11×13 casserole dish layer the meat sauce.
Then layer the Macaroni and Cheese (like lasagna noodles).
Layer with 1/2 cup of cheese.
Repeat layers (once) and bake!

The key to knowing if I have a hit with a new dish is my husband’s reaction to it…let’s just say that Mario is this dish’s biggest fan!!!
Happy eating!
